Space Arcade Games

People who are familiar with early arcade games may have noticed that many titles are set in space environments. An excellent example of this is Asteroids, which became a significant hit when it was released in the late 1970s.

Decades later games set in space are still regularly made. Designers who are tasked with creating a new video game should consider whether space is the right setting for it. There are several reasons why this might be the case.

An Escapist Setting

People often play video games in order to be transported into a fictional world. Space can serve this purpose because it is so far removed from ordinary life. Players can take on the role of astronauts, explorers and futuristic soldiers. In some cases, they can even be alien characters. Space is regularly used by designers as an escapist setting.

Could Be Linked To Science Fiction Movies

Sometimes when a science fiction movie comes out a number of tie in products are also released. These are used for marketing the film. Often a big-budget movie set in space will have a tie in-game. In some cases, the game may even end up being more successful.

A Chance To Get Creative

The problem with setting a game on Earth is that it can be fairly restrictive from a creative point of view. In contrast, the possibilities are endless if the game takes place in outer space. Designers can create brand new worlds and creatures. It is a chance for them to think outside the box.

The Visuals Can Be Dazzling

It also gives game makers the chance to make something that is very aesthetically pleasing. While empty outer space is black, the planets, comets, spaceships and other elements can have striking colour schemes. This may end up enticing new players.
